3G Americas Announces Java Technical Recommendations

US : 3G Americas, a trade association supporting the wireless industry throughout the Americas, today published a technical recommendation position paper on wireless Java(TM) technologies to drive application interoperability on handsets in the Americas.

The aim of these recommendations is to help establish a Java technology based platform that addresses the needs of operators, device OEMs, technology partners and Java application developers in the region with improved capabilities of current Java technology devices that can be implemented into devices in a reasonable timeframe.

Chris Pearson, President of 3G Americas stated, "This is a significant milestone to help standardize wireless Java technology deployments across the Americas for increased interoperability. These technical recommendations are a benefit to developers, operators and vendors as they reduce fragmentation and development costs for deploying Java technology-based mobile data services."

Globally there are more than 708 million Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition [J2ME(TM)] capable mobile devices worldwide, according to Ovum, and more than 140 operators that have deployed Java technology-based services, according to Nokia. Java technology-based devices are expected to reach 1.5 billion consumers by 2007 according to some analysts, and the overall revenue from services enabled by Java technologies is forecast to reach $15 billion by 2008.

"This effort also builds an important bridge to ease the migration to the future roadmap of mobile Java technologies, such as the Mobile Services Architecture (MSA), as defined in the Java Community Process (JCP). 3G Americas will present the details of its technical recommendations on June 28, 2005 from 10:30-11:20 p.m. at the JavaOne Conference at Moscone Center in San Francisco, California. The 3G Americas Java(TM) Technical Recommendations paper was prepared by members of 3G Americas with contributions from Sun Microsystems and input gathered from Java application developers, and is available for free download at the 3G Americas' website: www.3gamericas.org.
