2000 Wireless Event A Great Success

Perry LaForge, executive director of the CDG stated, "CDMA2000 is the premier 3G technology with 10 million wireless subscribers, more than 120 devices and multimedia services available in the global marketplace today." The 3G World Congress is the leading wireless event in Asia. This year nearly 1,700 delegates attended the conference sessions, exhibits and workshops. Conference-opening keynote speakers included Dr. Irwin Jacobs, chairman and chief executive officer of Qualcomm; Scott Kriens, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Juniper Networks; Dr. Won-Pyo Hong, executive vice president, board director, and chief business officer of KT Freetel; David Nagel, president and chief executive officer of Palm Platform Solutions Group; Rob Glaser, chairman and chief executive officer of RealNetworks; and Weigui Hou, president of ZTE Corp., China. Additional conference speakers included executives from 3GPP, 3GPP2, Bell Mobility, China United Telecommunications Corp., Hutchison Telecommunications, International Telecommunication Union (ITU), KDDI, Leap, Sprint PCS, Telstra, UMTS Forum and Verizon Wireless. One of the key events at the Congress was the annual 3G CDMA Industry Achievement Awards ceremony. The CDG recognized leading individuals and companies in wireless communications. Recipients of this year's awards included: Dr. Jae Byun, SK Telecom for Industry Leadership; KT Freetel for International Leadership; KDDI for Service Innovation; Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. for Subscriber Technology Innovation; Nortel Networks and Sprint PCS for Infrastructure Technology Innovation; and Hewlett-Packard Co., SignalSoft Corp., SnapTrack and Sprint PCS for Innovative Solutions. The
CDG hosted a media conference focusing on operators' and manufacturers'
experiences in delivering 3G services. Dr. Hideo Okinaka, general manager
of strategic technology planning, KDDI, discussed the company's phenomenal
CDMA2000 growth, reaching close to 900,000 3G subscribers and adding
10,000 new subscribers per day. The next major CDMA industry event, the 2002 CDMA Americas Congress, will be held Dec. 3-5, 2002 at the San Diego Convention Center in San Diego. |
