3G Americas applauds the new GSM, GPRS and EDGE Performance: Evolution Towards 3G/UMTS book, written by expert authors and published by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd (May 2002). The book, edited by Timo Halonen, Javier Romero and Juan Melero of Nokia Spain, S.A., features a comprehensive study of simulations and field trials performed on the system performance and capabilities of GSM, GPRS, and EDGE. Furthermore, the publication highlights the positive enhancements of the GSM evolutio! n including Adaptive Multi-rate (AMR) Codec and Dynamic Frequency and Channel Allocation.
In his Foreword to GSM, GPRS and EDGE Performance, Chris Pearson, Executive Vice President of 3G Americas emphasizes, "The future of EDGE has been understated, underestimated, and undervalued. The comprehensive analysis and trials presented in this book offer more than a GSM transition to 3G evolutionary technical strategy, rather the authors have created a scientifically sound testament of the merits and opportunities presented by EDGE."
Pearson also commented, "A primary mission of 3G Americas is to advocate the advancement of the EDGE technology through education and promotion to ensure a smooth transition to 3G services. We welcome the publication of a book that provides a technical analysis of spectrum and capacity issues and serves as a tool for engineering, management, and professional technical staff in the implementation of next generation GSM services."
This book arrives at an important time in the wireless industry as operator strategies are beginning to unfold. Seven operators in the Americas, who represent more than 73 million subscribers, have announced their commitments to deploy EDGE and agreements with major vendors to provide the infrastructure and equipment.
The breadth of technical information covered in GSM, GPRS and EDGE Performance, complements the business case presented by the EDGE Operators' Forum, a program supported by 3G Americas, the GSM Association, and the Global mobile Suppliers Association (GSA). EDGE Operators Forum (EOF) reports that EDGE is gaining steam in Europe for its spectrum efficiency as a complement to WCDMA and estimates that 90 percent of operators worldwide will commit to UMTS and EDGE. According to the EOF, EDGE terminals are scheduled for the fourth quarter of this year, with tri-band terminals for the Americas expected in 2003.
"As 3G wireless services become a reality, cellular operators now face the challenge of evolving their networks to efficiently support the forecasted demand for wireless Internet based multimedia services. This book provides a complete overview of the entire GSM system and shows how GSM technologies can be used in a competitive and cost-effective way," stated Timo Halonen, editor of GSM, GPRS and EDGE Performance.
