QUALCOMM applauds wireless service providers and equipment manufacturers in South Korea and Japan, co-hosts of the 2002 FIFA World Cup, on their leadership role in the deployment of third-generation (3G) CDMA2000 1X services. These markets will be a showcase for 3G devices, applications and services. During the World Cup, the mobile user experience will be enriched by the latest 3G capabilities, including watching video clips of the games, taking photographs and e-mailing them to friends, and in South Korea, downloading World Cup BREW applications that will allow them to obtain stadium, hotel and ticket information all from their 3G devices. "QUALCOMM would like to extend its congratulations to the wireless industries in South Korea and Japan for their supporting roles in co-hosting the 2002 FIFA World Cup and for being the first to commercially launch 3G services," said Dr. Irwin M. Jacobs, chairman and CEO of QUALCOMM. "Since the commercial launch of 3G services in these markets, consumers have been enjoying a wide range of compelling applications and services available on color-screen, multimedia-capable 3G devices. We look forward to their continued leadership in developing and providing advanced CDMA solutions." Mobile operators in South Korea and Japan are taking full advantage of the technological capabilities of 3G CDMA2000 for advanced wireless services. With four operators now offering commercial CDMA2000 1X services, the markets currently have approximately 10 million 3G subscribers. Additionally, these wireless consumers are experiencing a variety of innovative and compelling applications made available to them on over 85 state-of-the-art devices and solutions, such as smart phones, camera phones, MP3 phones and high-speed wireless modems. "3G is fast becoming a reality globally. Recent 3G deployments in the United States, Canada, Latin America and Eastern Europe are providing users with leading-edge devices, stable networks and compelling downloadable applications, while providing operators with increased ARPUs," continued Dr. Jacobs. CDMA2000 1X provides nearly double the voice capacity of cdmaOne systems and helps meet the continuous growth needs of voice services, while simultaneously providing new wireless Internet services. CDMA2000 1xEV-DO further enables high-speed wireless services by allowing "always on" data to be sent over Personal Communication Service (PCS) and cellular wireless networks at speeds (up to 2.4 Mbps) comparable to Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) or cable modems, at a lower cost-per-byte than any other 3G technology in development today. QUALCOMM supports CDMA2000 1X and 1xEV-DO with chipsets and system software that offer a variety of advanced features, including multimedia and position location technologies. QUALCOMM will be broadcasting a live webcast of the Companys press briefing from South Korea on Monday, June 10, at 8 a.m. Korean time via www.qualcomm.com. A rebroadcast of the event will be available the following day. For more information about QUALCOMMs participation at the World Cup games, please visit www.qualcomm.com/press. |
