CDMA2000 Wireless Ready To Meet The Future Market Needs Head On

US : Over 250 industry experts from all over the world gathered in Seoul, Korea on June 27-28, 2005 to participate in the Third Generation Partnership Project 2 (3GPP2) workshop “Evolving to Future Wireless Telecommunications Technology”. The event, organized in part by the Telecommunications Technology Association (TTA), 3GPP2’s Korean Organizational Partner, explored the evolution of the CDMA2000® system to meet the future market needs. The workshop was chaired by Gerry Flynn of Verizon Wireless, and Mr. Hong-Koo Kim, TTA Secretary General, was the keynote speaker.

“The workshop enabled key industry players to share their vision for the future and how CDMA2000 will deliver on this vision,” said YK KIM of LG Telecom, Chair of 3GPP2’s Steering Committee. ”We have made significant progress in defining parameters for the CDMA2000 evolution path and will continue to evaluate different techniques to build on existing capabilities to further increase spectral efficiencies, data throughput and service delivery.”

Perry LaForge, executive director of the CDG, commented, “The existing CDMA2000 standards provide operators a solid platform on which they can deliver advanced 3G services and transition to all-IP networks in the coming years. We will continuously look for new solutions and techniques to improve the performance of existing and future networks, bring better services to the customer and greater efficiencies to the operator.”

The Seoul workshop was the second industry meeting dealing with the long-term evolution path for CDMA2000. In March, 3GPP2 met in Denver, Colorado, to discuss the path for the cdma2000 air-interface. Last week’s workshop also discussed topics related to core network and terminals, including Radio Access Network Architecture, Multimedia and Speech Coding, Quality of Services, Security, Core Network Evolution, Multimedia Domain and OMA/Application Layer. Leading cdma2000 operators outlined their perspectives and requirements, and 3GPP2 technical groups and manufacturers presented different proposals for technology enhancements, including OFDM, MIMO, Smart Antenna and the use of multi-carriers to increase data throughput.
