CompctFlash Chip used In 3G

10th July 2003

US : Socket Communications announced an agreement with Novatel Wireless whereby Socket will supply its proprietary PC Card and CompactFlash interface chips and device driver software to Novatel Wireless for integration into the Merlin(TM) Family of Wireless PC Card Modems. Novatel Wireless initially purchased Socket's mobilityIC(TM) (HIS, High Integration Serial) interface chips and software for use in their highly popular Merlin C201(TM) CDMA2000 1X PC card modem. The mobilityIC chips and device driver software will now be incorporated into Merlin CDMA and GSM/GPRS wireless PC Card modems, enabling Novatel Wireless to focus on engineering and customer support.
"Socket's hardware and software design experience with chips used in solutions for handheld computers and notebooks helped accelerate the development of our Merlin C201," said Dr. Slim Souissi, chief technology officer for Novatel Wireless. "Our products are designed to keep up with today's emerging high-speed 2.5G and 3G data networks. Socket's interface chips are equal to that task."

"We're pleased to have Novatel Wireless incorporating Socket's mobilityICs and software technology into the Merlin product line," said Mike Gifford, founder and executive vice president of Socket. "Novatel Wireless will benefit by having reduced development costs, a common interface across different technologies, faster time to market and enhanced Mobility Friendly capabilities, such as minimal power consumption."

Socket's mobilityICs have been designed into more than twenty-five electronic products by numerous firms. These products include PC Card and CompactFlash cards enabling access to high-speed GPRS and CDMA2000 1X mobile phone networks as well as plug-in Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers that provide location information to a handheld or notebook computer.
