: TimesTen, Inc., a provider of real-time infrastructure software,
announced that NEC Corporation has embedded TimesTen®/DataServer
into its new AdvancedTCA(*)-based platform for Mobile Operators.
The
first products based on the new platform are new SGSN and GGSN (**)
packet core nodes that can process the rapidly growing internet
traffic for applications such as packetized voice and video, as
well as new services such as on-line gaming over 3G Mobile Packet
Networks. NEC chose TimesTen’s real-time database system for
its superior scalability, adherence to standards, and continuous
availability features.
The
NEC SGSN and GGSN are the world’s first commercial products
and run on an Intel-based system and a Carrier Grade Linux operating
system. The SGSN and GGSN comprise an industry-leading switch that
boosts the performance of data-intensive services while significantly
reducing the cost for operators deploying 3G networks using Wideband
Code-Division Multiple Access (WCDMA). Within the SGSN and GGSN,
TimesTen/DataServer manages system configuration and routing information,
including IP addresses, roaming and authentication information.
TimesTen/DataServer allows transactions to be processed and managed
in real time, ensuring greater flexibility, scalability, resilience,
and control. TimesTen/DataServer also facilitates a shorter development
cycle which results in increased overall productivity.
“WCDMA
operators are now deploying new, innovative data services that are
proving to strongly contribute to increased revenues and customer
satisfaction,” said Takatoshi Numasato, Senior General Manager
of the Mobile Network Operation Unit at NEC Corporation. “The
use of the SGSN and GGSN is vital to deploying these data services
as it provides an efficient means to access mobile data networks.
TimesTen is helping to meet this market demand by providing the
infrastructure software needed for a highly scalable and reliable
networking infrastructure,” added Numasato.
“Over
the next few years many new 3G networks will be migrating online,
capitalizing on the growing consumer and enterprise appetites for
new data-intensive services such as streaming video and remote access
to corporate systems,” said Jim Groff, CEO, TimesTen, Inc.
“NEC is one of the industry’s leading networking innovators
and has accelerated their time to market by leveraging AdvancedTCA
specifications and best-of-breed components such as Carrier Grade
Linux, and TimesTen. We are pleased to have a successful and growing
relationship directly with NEC and through our distributor Tokyo
Electron Limited in Japan,” added Groff.
