KDDI 3G Subscriber Shift

TOKYO...KDDI Corp said Friday the subscriber base for its third-generation "CDMA2000 1x" mobile phone service expanded 19.9% on month in December.

While the surge in 3G subscribers appears sharp, a breakdown of the data shows an ongoing shift of subscribers from its current second-generation services.

KDDI attracted 775,900 3G subscribers in December, bringing its 3G subscriber base to 4.674 million. At the same time, however, the telecom firm suffered a combined loss of 618,900 subscribers to its "cdmaOne" and "PDC" 2G services.

Overall, KDDI added a net total of 152,000 subscribers to its "au" and "Tu-Ka" cellular phone units in December. The combined cellphone subscriber base for the units stood at 17.317 million.

For its "EZweb" mobile internet service, KDDI added a net total of 239,600 subscribers in December, resulting in a total "EZweb" subscriber base of 11.773 million.
