CDMA2000 1X Wireless Network for PT Telecom In Indonesia

6th January 2002

Samsung officials have announced the details of a CDMA2000 1X hardware supply agreement concluded with PT Telkom, a state-run telecommunications operator in Indonesia. PT Telkom President Kristiono and Samsung Electronics Telecommunication Systems Division Senior Vice President, Hong Soon-ho signed a contract on Bali on December 23.

The contract on turn-key base calls for a CDMA2000 1X systems worth nearly US$200 million with delivery to be carried out between 2003 and 2005. The equipment includes enough mobile switching centers (MSCs) to handle 1.6 million subscribers as well as a base station system (BSS) capacity of 800,000 subscriber lines. Importantly, Indonesian government policy stipulates that a single type of switching system be used throughout the country, and Samsung Electronics has been named the exclusive supplier of this equipment. The base station systems, too, will be deployed over 80% of Indonesia, to include Java, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, and Bali.

Samsung Electronics delivered the base station systems for a 40,000-subscriber capacity network in Surabaya in October of this year. BSS for an additional 330,000 subscribers will be supplied in 2003, 220,000 subscriber lines in 2004 and 210,000 in 2005.

On the day of the contract signing, the 40,000-line network supplied previously went into commercial service. A special event was held on Bali to mark the occasion, with the Indonesian Communications Minister and other high-ranking government officials in attendance.

The equipment supplied by Samsung Electronics will initially be used to provide voice calls, Internet access, email service, short message service, facsimile transmission, and voice mail. This CDMA2000 1X systems will play a key role in the modernization of Indonesia’s telecommunications network over the next three years.
