New Samsung Palm Powered 3G Enabled Handset In US

6th January 2002

Wireless industry innovators Sprint and Samsung announced nationwide availability of the PCS Phone by Samsung SPH-i330. This fully integrated Vision Capable Device combines a PCS Full Color screen, the functionality of the Palm OS® platform and the clarity of a PCS Phone in one. The new smart device is similar to its predecessor, the PCS Phone by Samsung SPH-i300, but features the advanced capabilities and enhanced speeds of PCS Vision in a more slender, refined handheld form factor to provide a productivity tool with even more power.

“After launching the first color Palm OS-based wireless phone in North America with Samsung last year, we are thrilled to now introduce the next generation model – the PCS Phone by Samsung SPH-i330,” said Phil Bowman, vice president, business marketing, PCS Division, Sprint.

“Sprint continues to lead the market in providing innovative, functional and integrated devices that allow customers to do everything from surfing the Web to checking their calendars to accessing their personal and corporate email on a single device. The i330 is the latest PCS Vision enabled smart device offered as part of the PCS Clear Wireless Workplace to help customers make clear calls, stay connected and be productive anywhere on the enhanced Sprint Nationwide PCS Network.”

The i330 features a large 160 x 240 pixel, 256-color touch screen panel display that allows customers to navigate pop-up screen menus and view HTML Web sites with the Handspring Blazer™ multi-mode browser. Customers can take advantage of the i330’s fast, always-on data connection to access personal and corporate email, and browse the Web via the enhanced Sprint Nationwide PCS Network. Introduced nationwide in August 2002, the CDMA2000 network supports data speeds averaging 50 to 70 Kbps, with peak speeds of 144 Kbps.

“With the SPH-i330 by Samsung, consumers will find a sleek, compact handheld device that handles both their voice and data needs with ease,” said Peter Skarzynski, senior vice president of wireless terminals, Samsung. “The 3G data capabilities of the enhanced Sprint Nationwide PCS Network, along with the advanced features of Samsung’s wireless phone technology and PalmSource’s operating system, make the i330 a great tool for users who always need to have information at their fingertips.”

With16 MB of memory, the i330 enables customers to utilize Palm OS features to schedule meetings, check phone numbers and reference downloaded emails while talking on the phone. The i330 is compatible with nearly all of the 15,000 Palm OS applications available today, so customers can download applications that fit their specific business, learning or entertainment needs. Customers will also be able to take advantage of the following PCS Vision applications:
