US : Mobile Linux company Azingo (formerly Celunite) announced today that its LiMo Foundation-based software platform, Azingo Mobile, is now available on cellular reference design platforms developed by Broadcom, a global leader in semiconductors for wired and wireless communications. This open mobile software/chipset platform based on LiMo Foundation software will be demonstrated at the 2008 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain. The demonstration will be performed on a reference 3G phone at three MWC booths including Azingo (Booth #2.1D57), Broadcom (Booth #4.1HS02) and LiMo (Booth #8B135), Feb. 11th through 14th.
The new 3G mobile phone reference platform combines the Azingo Mobile software platform with the Broadcom multimedia baseband processor to create a powerful, economical and open platform for mobile phones and portable media players that can support cutting-edge multimedia and connectivity features, while maintaining the additional processing power to run a complete open operating system.
Designed for high-volume markets, Broadcom’s reference design features the dual ARM core BCM2153 with integrated support for 7.2Mbps HSDPA baseband and applications processor; the BCM59035 power management unit; and the BCM4325 connectivity solution that combines market-leading Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and a FM receiver in a single chip design. The integration of Broadcom silicon with Azingo Mobile software provides global operators, 3G mobile handset manufacturers, and makers of consumer electronics products with the enhanced development tools to deliver feature-rich user experiences and widespread adoption of Linux-based handsets.
“Azingo has emerged as a strong player in the LiMo community and offers a very advanced mobile Linux software design platform,” said Jim Tran, vice president and general manager of Broadcom’s Mobile Communications line of business. “Their comprehensive LiMo-based platform leverages Broadcom’s processing power to offer mobile operators and handset manufacturers a compelling 3G mobile Linux solution.”
“Broadcom’s latest chipset offers an outstanding suite of multimedia processing capabilities at an attractive cost,” said Mahesh Veerina, president and CEO of Azingo. “Their silicon, together with the power and flexibility offered by our Azingo Mobile software, leapfrogs legacy mobile operating systems to offer one of the most exciting integrated platforms today for graphical, audio and video applications.”
The Azingo/Broadcom platform is ideal for mobile phones, mobile TVs and portable audio, video and game devices. It comfortably supports high-demand user applications including high-performance mobile audio and video multimedia, advanced web browsing, email, 3G mobile telephony and more. Azingo Mobile is based on the platform being established by the LiMo Foundation to help unify and defragment the mobile Linux ecosystem. The LiMo Foundation, founded by Motorola, NEC, NTT DoCoMo, Panasonic Mobile Communications, Samsung Electronics, and Vodafone, is developing the world’s first globally competitive, Linux-based software platform for mobile devices.
