Brazil
: Following the launch of their GSM EDGE network in November 2004,
Telemig Celular and Amazônia Celular have selected mobile
solutions company SmartTrust to deploy a range of service and device
management solutions to better manage subscribers, their devices
and their access to services.

The
carriers, with over 3,6 million subscribers in Brazil, will use
SmartTrust SmartManage™ to automatically detect new devices
on the GSM EDGE network and automatically configure them to access
operator services over-the-air (OTA). SmartTrust SmartaLaCarte™
will also be rolled-out to allow Telemig and Amazônia to remotely
build configurable service and application menus on customer SIM
cards.
SmartTrust
SmartManage™ offers a single interface to administer profiles
and device settings OTA. When a new device is detected on the network,
the SmartTrust platform triggers an automatic update for the handset.
This ensures that all new subscribers on the GSM EDGE network can
access the carrier’s portfolio of voice and data services
immediately after purchase.
“The
complexity of today’s mobile devices represents a real device
management challenge for today’s carriers,” explains
Alexander Nicolas Dannias, Regional Sales Director, at SmartTrust.
“A variety of device profiles, OTA protocols and service capabilities
can now be managed centrally using SmartManage™. Now only
does this simplify operator administration but it immediately enhances
the customer experience, with subscriber devices correctly configured
at all times.”
“Telemig
Celular and Amazônia Celular’s service portfolio is
one of the most complete in Latin America. That variety of services
will expand in the GSM EDGE network because the technology’s
higher data ranges allows for a greater variety of services. Our
subscribers will communicate with people all over the world using
mobile e-mail and instant messaging tools including MSN, ICQ, Yahoo.
Additional services include MMS, video downloads, ring tones, Java
games, screen savers and phone book backup. The SmartTrust platform
will enable us to support the growth in subscriber take-up of GSM
EDGE in the region, continually managing their devices and how they
use these services,” adds Erik Fernandes, CMO at Telemig Cellular/Amazônia
Cellular.
SmartaLaCarte™
has already proven itself across many parts of Asia as a key data
revenue generator. The solution allows a carrier to create, and
remotely manage, configurable menus held on the customer’s
SIM. These menus provide links to further data services and allow
the user to browse available content ‘off-line’, requesting
services as required. Not requiring WAP or GPRS connections from
the handset, the solution allows a carrier to offer value-added
services to users with even entry-level devices.
Both
SmartaLaCarte and automatic device detection leverage the SmartTrust
WIB™. The WIB has become the mobile industry’s de facto
SIM Interpreter, acting as the launch pad for value-added services
and the interpreter between the SIM and a carrier’s OTA commands.
Telemig and Amazônia will launch WIB v1.3-enabled 64k cards
from Oberthur and Giesecke & Devrient to each of its GSM customers.
Telemig
and Amazônia will also deploy: SmartTrust JAM, offering Java™
Card applet management capabilities. SmartTrust High Speed Messaging
Package (HSMP) to deliver flexible and efficient handling of short
message (SM) traffic without any need for a specific SMS-C interface
to the GSM network.
