Europe : PacketVideo sets the tone for wireless in 2005 as it demonstrates two leading-edge technologies during the 3GSM show this week. According to this small but influential company, two-way video telephony and mobile TV will be hot wireless services in 2005. PacketVideo is demonstrating its commercially deployed video telephony software, which comes pre-loaded in the new Nokia 6680, as well as the Nokia 6630 and Motorola a925 mobile phones. The software provides the ability to conduct synchronous, two-way voice and video conversations with video conferencing, picture-in-picture and call recording options. Company representatives are also demonstrating live digital TV broadcasts to mobile devices in conjunction with French semiconductor supplier DiBcom. Mobile TV, a new wireless phenomenon based on the DVB-H standard (Digital Video Broadcast-Handsets), is widely heralded as the next breakthrough in multimedia content delivery, and is being developed by all major handset OEMs and carriers. "2005 is the year of mobile media," declared Dr. James Brailean, CEO of PacketVideo. "3G mobile networks are being rolled out all over the world, and they were built for multimedia. New video-on-demand, mobile TV, music-on-demand and music download, plus two-way video calling services are riding the wave of the new networks. It's an exciting time to be in wireless."
