Italian Football Goes Mobile In Japan

Europe Italy : MP Web, the New-Media company of Media Partners Group, European leader in the acquisition of sports rights and distribution, announces two mobile telephone distribution agreements in Japan and Thailand to broadcast Italian Serie A football.

The mobile phone agreements will see the transmission of approximately 60% of Serie A and B football games via photo and video through mobile picture messaging.

These rights have been acquired by MP Web until 2010, licensing to Vodafone with regards to the Italian territory. These agreements have come about thanks to the presence of the Media Partners Group in Asia, with a representative office in Shanghai for the past year under the guidance of Andrea Radrizzani.

With regard to Japan, the exclusive agreement will be in place for three years (until the end of the 2005/06 season) and was signed with PLATIA INC., a leading media and entertainment provider to mobile operators in Japan.

Football in Japan represents a new booming market and Serie A is by far the most popular league with Japanese fans.

There are 62 million fans who follow football on television, look for their favourite sport on Internet or Mobile Phones. In Japan there are over 40 millions of multimediale phones and the sales are increasing: in December 2003 the sales exceed 11,6% compared to November. This is the thirteenth consecutive rise.

The exclusive rights in Thailand were awarded to SAMART, the principle content provider owned by the leading telecommunications company in that country. In this case, a five-year deal was signed and will run until 2008. Italian football is also the one of most followed and watched sports in Thailand.

In both cases, MP Web will also provide the product, the terminal ready images and all the match news and statistics each week.

MP Web chief executive, Riccardo Silva said: “Throughout the world, Italian football represents some of the most appealing content. We are honoured to manage the distribution of Serie A images worldwide via mobile handsets, this project is an extremely innovative one. In Japan and Thailand, we have selected prestigious partners and new agreements will be announced in the next few weeks.”
