Adjungo Networks announced the successful demonstration of seamless handoff of a wireless data session between WLAN and GPRS networks, enabling mobile laptop users to perform data sessions while roaming between the two network types based on secured SIM authentication. Using Adjungo’s MobileGate platform users were able to initiate a secure SIM authenticated data session on an 802.11 WLAN or a GPRS network, and maintain it while moving from one network to the other, in order to seamlessly use the best available access. The direct outcome is a real opportunity for mobile carriers to differentiate themselves in the emerging WLAN market. The
solution is based on seamless integration with the existing mobile network
infrastructure. The GPRS Mobility Management (GMM) infrastructure is
utilized to enable seamless mobility between the GPRS and WLAN networks.
The unique architecture of the solution addresses the WLAN security
concerns. The platform performs a secure WLAN authentication, using
a SIM card and the mobile The MobileGate server is a bridge between the GPRS and WLAN networks. It integrates with the mobile network side over SS7 and IP, and acts as an SGSN. On the WLAN side, the platform performs an AAA server role, supporting the emerging 802.1x enabled hot spots as well as legacy WLAN hot spots. This enables the operator to use flexible WLAN deployment models, ranging from owning the entire network to serving hot spots owned by third party service providers. The MobileGate Client is installed on the end-user terminal, and is responsible for managing the end-user experience. It interfaces with the WLAN card on the device, and supports GPRS cards as well as a Bluetooth interface to the user’s GPRS handset. The MobileGate Client scans continuously for available networks within any given service area, performs automatic identification of the network, and connects as per the user request. It provides a friendly and feature rich interface that enables access to the Internet and other network-based services such as Email, SMS and MMS. "Mobile operators have a unique opportunity to leverage the prospering WLAN business, for generation of additional revenues from both GPRS and WLAN networks. The combination of the GPRS wide area coverage with broad band WLAN hotspots is exactly what the nomadic user needs,” said Adina Enden, Chief Executive Officer of Adjungo Networks. “We strongly believe that with MobileGate, WLAN is becoming an opportunity, rather than a threat, for the mobile network operators." |
