| Wireless Phone Receives Design Award |
11th February 2003 |
The development of the mobile telephone is rather reminiscent of the transformation from caterpillar to butterfly: In just a few years, clumsy and unattractive “bricks“ have turned into compact and handy devices that have now even become valued as fashion accessories. And with the S55, Siemens has now come up with a particular tour-de-force that has even been acknowledged with the iF Design Prize. The jury, comprising 25 international design professionals, had special praise for the innovative and ergonomically sensible design of the S55’s keypad. The novel feature here is that the keypad is designed without gaps, which means that the keys themselves are close together, and thus larger and easier to use. The round, centrally-located navigation key makes for rapid control of the phone. The high quality of the materials used in the device and its compact layout also impressed the jury. At just 10.1 centimeters in length, and weighing in at a paltry 85 grams, the Siemens S55 is also extremely handy. The side keys, enabling simple volume control, even during a call, and activation of the dictating machine, are chromed. The “Sterling Silver” and “Arctic Blue” color-schemes are the perfect complement to the understated lines of the new all-rounder from Siemens. However the new Siemens business “mobile” is much more than just a treat for the eyes. Thanks to its Triband technology, it is the mobile for all situations and all the customary networks, making it equally at home almost anywhere in the world. And with the S55, everyone can be well organized: With an enhanced organizer, flexible memory, a color display and Java technology, this mobile all-rounder brings harmony to the difficult relationship between work and leisure. This small and elegant instrument is the perfect companion for busy and exceptionally style-conscious people. The S55, complete with a plug-in QuickPic camera featuring intelligent integrated flash retails at 499 euros (without card, incl. VAT). Like all other products boasting the iF accolade, the mobile will be on show in the iF pavilion at the Cebit 2003 fair. |
