New KDDI 3G BREW Handset

KDDI Corp. and Okinawa Cellular introduce BREW, a new application platform for mobile phones, for third-generation (CDMA2000 1x) handsets, which offer high-speed data communications at speeds of up to 144 kbps.

The first version of the BREW mobile phones, the A5304T (manufactured by Toshiba Corp.), is scheduled for release in late February.

The introduction of BREW will enable mutual distribution of applications in Japan, China, and Korea. At the same time, it will provide corporate customers with mobile phone customization solutions to meet the needs of individual companies, while providing individual customers with entertaining applications in a more comfortable environment than before.

Notably, as part of its activities targeting corporate customers, KDDI will be conducting joint development with IBM Japan, Ltd., on the BREW Business Profile, a set of corporate solutions using the BREW platform. Other activities will include the development of various infrastructures, including high value-added middleware that enables flexible customization in keeping with the needs of corporate customers.

KDDI and Okinawa Cellular currently offer four au MOVIE KEITAI handsets with digital camera functions and a total of 15 CDMA 2001 1x mobile phone models.

Movie Mail
Built-in camera enables smooth, high-quality movie recording. Up to 15 seconds of video images can be recorded in blocks of 5, 10, or 15 seconds.
Offers editing and subtitle functions, and allows movies to be sent immediately after recording, as an e-mail attachment. Videos sent using this function can be played back on Movie Mail mobile phones, PCs, or other media.
Movie mail and photo mail can be sent to pre-registered mail address while the phone is still closed (Only Mail).

Large 2.3 inch main display (largest in the industry)
Main display features a 2.3 inch low-temperature polysilicon TFT LCD screen, for dynamic movie and photo images on a large screen.

310,000 pixel CCD camera and mobile light
High-sensitivity CCD camera features 4-stage, 6.6x zoom and 310,000 pixels (total of 350,000 pixels). Built-in mobile light enables bright, clear recording even in dimly lit locations.

CHAKU-UTA ringer songs
Unlike conventional ringing melodies, users can now download the chorus of hit songs with the artist's vocals included (about 30 seconds) from EZweb sites, and use these songs as ringer tones or just enjoy listening to their favorite artists. Hitomi Yaida's hit song Mikansei no Melody has been preset in the A5304T.
Phones can be set to play a combination of recorded movies and ringing songs when a call or mail is received.

Colorful Window
The Colorful Window sub-display features an STN Color LCD with a large 1.1 inch screen and 65,536 colors. In addition to acting as a viewfinder during recording of movies and photos, the sub-display can be started up with the side key for easy recording even while the phone is closed.
While on standby, the display can be set to show colorful wallpaper or a background clock with an original design. The sub-display can also replay movies or show photos when a call or mail is received.

Mobile Rupo + AI Conversion
With the new advanced Mobile Rupo function, the A5304T recognizes the context of Japanese words in the sentence, and converts Kana to the correct Kanji based on that context for even easier text input.

Next-generation services

Using a link with EZnavigation, maps can be displayed easily through the EZbrowser from a movie or photo that contains positional information. *This service may not be accessible for some contents.
