CDMA
Wireless - The Technology for Nigeria |
6th February 2003 |
Africa - ALLAFRICA.com - As the telecoms sector continues to explode especially in the Lagos area, boss of Starcomms, Mr. Dirk Smet, has continued to insist that CDMA 20001X is the telecom facility for Nigeria. He spoke to Hi Tech in the light of more PTOs joining his frontal approach in the use of the same technology in their rollout plans. Because of this development, Mr. Smet insisted that Nigeria is on the driving seat of CDMA promotion in the continent, adding however that it was good sign of greater things to happen in the sector since CDMA 20001X is choice technology that can provide choice voice and data communications services anywhere it is located. For those who use CDMA 20001X, he continued, the quality of service is reliable and consistent. Under a new burst of energy unleashed by the leadership of Smet, Starcomms recently put in place a $60 million facility in Lagos, an effort that was highly commended by government. The facility which has a capacity for 500,000 lines has at the moment be enabled for 150,000. These lines will do voice and data, and are yet about the most tested for internet services. While pledging to be a promoter of the CDMA technology through scholarship, Smet informed that he would soon take Starcomms to the CDMA Development Group {CDG} as the first Nigerian company to join the group. What this means is that Starcomm would be recognised as an African group that has joined the global CDMA community. He noted that such development would provide a lot of scholarship and information which the entire country can benefit from. As a promoter of the technology he added he would invest every effort to pursue it. Some of the literature provided revealed that CDMA is one of the fastest spreading technologies across the world. The reason is obvious: Today's CDMA service is based on the IS-95-A. A refinement of this standard, IS-95B, allows up to eight channels to be combined for packet-data rates as high as 64Kbps. Japanese CDMA carriers, IDO and DDI, are planning on deploying this higher speed by early 2000. Beyond IS-95B, CDMA evolves into 3G technology in a standard called CDMA 2000. CDMA 2000 comes in two phases. The first, with a specification already completed, is IXRTT, while the next phase is 3XRTT. The IX and 3X refer to the number of 1.25MHz wide radio carrier channels used, and RTT refers to radio-transmission technology. CDMA 2000 includes numerous improvements over IS-95A, including more sophisticated power control, new modulation on the reverse channels, and improved data encoding methods. The result is significantly higher capacity for the same amount of spectrum, and data rates up to 2Mbps that meet the IMT-2000 requirements. From the foregoing, it is obvious that inherent qualities will endear the technology to any serious private operator because of the quality of service that it can provide. As a wireless technology which has the ability to perform like the traditionally wired line, Mr. Smet has promised to campaign for CDMA 2000IX through his company's deployment of the system, and by also ensuring that unfolding literature gets into the hands of the people.
