160
Million A-GPS Wireless Phone Sales by 2008 |
4th February 2003 |
Inset is David Kerr, Vice President of Strategy Analytics who is quoted below. Neil Mawston, Senior Analyst with the Strategy Analytics Global Wireless Practice, notes, "In the US, the adoption of embedded A-GPS will be driven by the government's E911 mandate, which requires all US operators to upgrade their equipment to enable the tracking of emergency cell phone calls by the end of 2005. CDMA carriers Sprint and Verizon have led this effort. At the end of 2002, more than half of the handsets available from these two carriers were A-GPS-enabled." Other key findings from this Strategy Analytics Global Wireless Practice Insight include: KDDI of Japan is the world's leading GPS carrier, with 4 Million users at the end of 2002; Among the pack trailing Qualcomm in the race for A-GPS solutions are Global Locate, Valence Semiconductor, and SiRF Technologies. David Kerr, Vice President of Strategy Analytics, says, "In Western Europe, location-based services and solutions are a secondary priority for carriers, with their major focus being on driving data revenue growth via messaging, imaging, gaming and information content services. The US is forging ahead in the location market and continues to widen its lead over Europe in terms of advanced terminals." |
