New Sharp Sha-mail Wireless Phone

3rd February 2003

J-PHONE Co., Ltd. announced today it will offer two new Sha-mail (picture messaging) handsets, the J-T09 by Toshiba and the J-SH010 by Sharp, for sale after the end of February 2003. Sha-mail is a service that enables users to send pictures as e-mail attachments.

The J-T09 features a 2.1-inch high-resolution poly-silicon TFT LCD, an embedded CCD mobile camera and comes packed with photography, picture editing and Sha-mail functions. In addition, users can read the full text of e-mails while the handset is closed using its large, 1-inch sub-display. Those requiring simple operation and large-size characters can be at ease using the "Simple Mode 2" interface. Text entry has also been made easy with the inclusion of "Mobile Rupo", which includes predictive entry functions and AI character conversion.

The J-SH010 features the mobile phone industry's largest 2.4-inch size "System LCD" for unsurpassed high quality resolution and imaging. Those who enjoy taking pictures will appreciate the J-SH010's highly sensitive built-in CCD camera for VGA and QVGA photography and a wide range of features have also been included to take advantage of the handset's QVGA display capability. Other convenient functions include a bar code reader and composer as well as a mobile light even brighter than those found in previous models.

With the addition of the J-T09 and J-SH010 to the J-PHONE lineup, there are now a total of 25 Sha-mail handsets*, thereby bringing the pleasures of Sha-mail to an even greater number of people.

Main Features of the J-SH010 (Manufactured by Sharp) Mobile phone first: industry's largest 2.4-inch "System LCD" for high quality resolution and imaging
The J-SH010 comes with the industry's first* "System LCD" based on Continuous-Grain Silicon (CG Silicon) technology, which allows for unsurpassed high quality resolution and imaging. The large-size 2.4-inch screen is capable of high-resolution displays at 240 x 320 pixels and 260,000 colors. The J-SH010 also solves previous display issues by clearly displaying small characters and gradations. (*As of January 2003)

Highly sensitive built-in CCD camera capable of photography in VGA and QVGA
The J-SH010 features a highly sensitive CCD mobile camera with 310,000 effective pixels. Users can choose from four different photography modes: "Sha-mail mode", "Wallpaper mode" for pictures in QVGA (240 x 320 pixels), "Digital Camera Mode" for pictures in VGA (640 x 480 pixels) and "Action Snap Mode"* for taking videos with audio up to 60 seconds in length (at a rate of 5 frames per second). The J-SH010 also comes with other camera functions including motor drive for 9 or 4 pictures in succession, 4x digital zoom and close-up options. (*Note: Only pictures taken in Sha-mail mode can be attached to e-mails)

Full range of features takes advantage of large-size QVGA main display
Photos taken in Sha-mail and other modes that come up small on the screen can be doubled in size at one touch of the button and photo enlargement or shrinking can be done with ease by using the up or down keys. One can also switch between three types of character display sizes for the most suitable display of web content and e-mail screens. Furthermore, QVGA pictures taken in wallpaper mode can be separated into four parts for sending as e-mail attachments. When sending to another J-SH010, the receiver can merge the four separate sections and save the photo to memory. A host of other features are available, including an option for merging two separate photos into long, horizontal panorama shots.

Bar code reading and composition functions
The J-SH010 comes with a bar code reading ability that uses the camera close-up function. The handset can link and read segmented bar codes (QR codes) as well as read multiple bar codes at once in sequence. Moreover, the J-SH010 features a QR code composing function that enables users to convert personal information, phone directories, e-mail and text content into QR codes. The QR code compositions can then be sent as e-mail attachments.

An even brighter mobile light
The J-SH010's high-luminance mobile light can be used as a spotlight or for photography. Brightness has been doubled compared to the previous J-SH09 model, and seven colors can be selected for photo coloring. In addition, the light can be set to seven different colors for incoming calls of registered callers when used as an incoming call lamp.
