Turnkey System for Measuring PIM and S-Parameters of 3G Components

6th December, 2004

US : Anritsu Company introduces the PIM-S system, an innovative test solution that offers a single connection for swept frequency S-parameter and Passive Intermodulation (PIM) measurements on passive components used in the deployment of 3G base stations. Based on Anritsu's innovative Scorpion Vector Network Measurement System (VNMS), the PIM-S system allows manufacturers to consolidate test stations, increase productivity, and simplify testing of cables, adapters, isolators, transmit filters, duplexers, tower mount amplifiers (TMAs), and antennas during the manufacturing process.

A variety of PIM-S system configurations are available to address the most popular wireless standards, including GSM/EGSM, DCS 1800, PCS 1900, and UMTS-FDD. All PIM-S system configurations conform to industry recommendations and IEC 62037. Additionally, the PIM-S system architecture complies with emerging PIM testing requirements for testing with two +46 dBm (40 Watts) tones.

Both transmission and reflection PIM requirements are supported by the PIM-S system, which has typical PIM residual levels of -125 dBm for precise measurements of the third, fifth, and seventh order PIM products. In addition, the ability to simultaneously view all the PIM products in the receive band results in much faster measurements during final test. Maximum output power is +46 dBm per tone up to the 2110-2170 MHz range, which allows the PIM-S system to comply with expected power levels that reveals hidden PIM problems. The system can also perform S-parameter tests between 10 MHz and 3 GHz with a single connection, which decreases the cost-of-test and increases throughput.

At the foundation of the PIM-S systems is the Scorpion VNMS, the highest functionality vector network measurement instrument in the industry. In addition to a 3-port Scorpion, the PIM-S systems incorporate a PIM Power Amplifier Unit, PIM Filter Unit, interconnect accessories, and PIM-S software. Developed to simplify setup and orchestrate both PIM and S-parameter measurements, the software provides an intuitive method to perform setup, calibration, measurements, and results in production environments. The software provides a variety of PIM displays, including PIM with fixed frequency tones, PIM with swept frequency tones, and PIM versus time. In a similar way, the S-parameter results can be viewed without changing physical connections.
