Quality Streamed Video Over GPRS Wireless |
10th December 2002 |

Inset is a picture of a Handheld playing a video clip. MVI's unique bandwidth management software allows full streamed video at 25 frames/second to be delivered at bandwidth as low as 25 kbps, and is fully scaleable for when 3G networks are installed. The software is fully compatible with 2.5G mobile networks worldwide including GPRS in Europe/Asia and WCDMA in the U.S., and can even be used to deliver impressive quality video over GSM. The system is currently being demonstrated over O2 XDA's and Compaq iPAQ hand-held devices, and will be available over the new generation of Nokia and Ericsson phones in Q1 2003. MVI is in negotiations with content providers and network operators and will have 30 channels of sport, news and entertainment available for launch in time for Christmas 2003. Some £1m has been raised to fund the development of the software to date and MVI is now looking to raise up to £6.5m (US$10m) to take it through to commercial launch in the fourth quarter of 2003. MVI will earn revenue from licensing agreements for its software, including those to closed user groups such as investment banks wishing to make morning meetings available to clients, and from telephone revenues. The revenue from each call made to view the video clips will be split between network operators, content providers, and MVI. Users will be able to browse the MVI content site, or can be alerted to new video clips as they become available by SMS messages which if responded to stream the clip immediately. Gerrard Williams, CEO of Mobile Video Imaging, says "MVI has delivered over 2.5G networks what many people thought could not be done until the introduction of 3G. The MVI system is network and device agnostic and does not require specialised chips in the phone at the point of manufacture. Revenue opportunities are substantial."
