CDMA2000 Wireless 1xRTT Launched In Canada

3rd December 2002

MTS today launched a next generation, digital wireless network in Winnipeg that offers speeds up to five times faster on MTS's wireless data services. Called 1xRTT, the new network sets the stage for the next wave of higher bandwidth, media rich wireless services.

"The launch of our 1xRTT network takes us to the next level of wireless
service in terms of speed and efficiency," says Cheryl Barker, President and
COO of MTS Communications Inc. "The higher speeds will give our mobile,
wireless data customers instant access to the Internet and their corporate
email. The new network also lays the foundation for the wireless services of
the future."

The 1xRTT network is the next evolution of MTS's CDMA (Code Division
Multiple Access) network. It provides speeds up to 86Kpbs - up to five times
faster than current speeds, with the potential for speeds up to 144 Kpbs in
the future. Information is sent in data packets, which maximizes the carrying
capacity of the network. In addition, 1xRTT is an 'always on' service so users
don't have to take the time to connect to the Internet.

MTS is offering a choice of three monthly plans, from 28 Kpbs up to
86Kpbs, depending on the speed of service customers need.
Higher speed access will enhance the capabilities of tools like Personal
Digital Assistants (PDAs), hand-held computers, and laptops. Games, music and
web content will be much quicker to access, and users will be able to download
large text files and graphics in seconds. Using MTS's 1xRTT network, Winnipeg
users will find it much easier to customize their cell phones by downloading
ring tones, screensavers and icons.

The new network also lays the foundation for a new generation of wireless
tools and mobile applications that MTS will begin rolling out in 2003. These
new services will incorporate graphics sound, and Internet content, and offer
MTS customers a personalized, feature-rich, multi-media, mobile experience.
"With this launch, we are narrowing the gap between landline and wireless
services, bringing a whole new level of convenience, productivity and
personalization to our customers," adds Barker.

MTS offers a number of wireless data services that provide a connection
to the Internet and email service. They include the Mobile Browser(TM) -
Internet access using a web-enabled digital cell phone, and Data to Go(TM)
solutions - Internet access through a computing device (a laptop or PDA),
using either a modem card or connecting the device to a digital phone.
