8th December , 2006

ASIA Hong Kong : Samsung succeeded in demonstrating High-Speed Uplink Packet Access (HSUPA) systems and mobile phones at ITU Telecom World 2006. Taking place in Hong Kong from December 4 to 8, the ITU Telecom World is one of the largest telecommunication trade shows. Samsung's success of first HSUPA live demonstration on the mobile phone in public enlightens this precious event even further.

HSUPA is the enhanced version of WCDMA, offering higher data communication speeds for uplink. With HSUPA networks, users can upload and receive photos, video clips, data files, and share contents more easily with their friends and family members.

Through HSUPA demonstration, Samsung could explore the next mobile broadband service era since the first HSDPA phone introduction earlier this year.

At the demonstration, Samsung's network equipment and mobile phones reached speeds up to 2 Mbps for uplink and 3.6Mbps for downlink. The speed demonstrated is capable of handling large scale of data communications such as video streaming and ftp file transferring. Comparing with current WCDMA upload speed, the HSUPA demo is 5 times faster. For example, it takes 1 minute to upload 5 MP3 songs (assuming 3 Mega Byte per song) under HSUPA circumstance, while it took 5 minutes to upload the 5 MP3 songs under WCDMA.

Samsung plans to introduce the first commercial HSUPA phone in Europe by 2007. Orange, one of the world leaders in the mobile industry, will be one of Samsung's earliest partners for HSUPA deployment. Kitae Lee, president of Samsung Electronics' Telecommunication Network Business, stated: "I am very pleased to introduce Samsung's latest mobile technology at ITU Telecom World 2006 and even more pleased to announce the collaboration with Orange, our utmost client."

He added: "We hope to bring HSUPA technology as soon as possible to our consumers so that end users can enjoy the benefits of our latest technology."

Currently, Samsung is a major mobile phone provider for Orange with the latest mobile services including Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA) and HSDPA.
