US : Spirent Communications announced market-leading enhancements to its location-based services (LBS) test platform. The Spirent UMTS Location Test System (ULTS) ( inset ) is the only commercially available system that enables the full range of Assisted GPS (A-GPS) testing needs; technology and chipset development, design verification of GSM and UMTS devices and UMTS terminal certification.

The Spirent ULTS enables GCF certification of LBS-capable UMTS mobile devices. Five out of six test cases from the 3GPP’s TS 34.171 A-GPS terminal conformance specification have been validated by the Global Certification Forum (GCF) on the Spirent ULTS. The ULTS is the first and only platform to exceed the 80% test case validation threshold required to trigger A-GPS terminal certification.

The Spirent ULTS platform has also expanded to meet the needs of A-GPS chipset and module developers and evaluators. Based on Spirent’s proven platform, the new ULTS A-GPS Development System (ULTS-ADS) is designed specifically for optimizing the performance of an A-GPS chipset or module via a combination of industry-standard test cases and flexible performance test capability.

“Spirent’s focus on both standards-based certification testing and lab-based performance test solutions demonstrates our dedication to enabling the deployment of location-based services,” commented Richard Catmur, business development manager at Spirent’s Wireless & Positioning Division. “Our ground-breaking work around TS 34.171 will help operators ensure successful deployment of new location-based services. The development of ULTS-ADS allows vendors to validate A-GPS device performance faster and more completely than ever before.”

A-GPS module and technology developers require a sophisticated test environment that includes GPS RF signals, assistance data flows and call signalling. The ULTS-ADS is a unique offering that routes messages to and from an A-GPS module via a Spirent-defined interface. Both 3GPP Control Plane and OMA SUPL User Plane implementations are supported, as well as module-based and module-assisted positioning methods. The new product combines industry-standard test cases validated on Spirent’s ULTS with TestDrive executive software and Spirent’s class-leading GSS6560 GPS simulator to provide an automated, lab-based A-GPS environment. Call flow flexibility is offered by a Spirent SMLC Emulator which is included as standard with the ULTS-ADS.

With the availability of the ADS configuration, the ULTS platform now addresses the full range of A-GPS testing needs, from technology and chipset development to design verification of GSM and UMTS devices and UMTS terminal certification.
