Nokia Lumia 1020 gets camera boost with Lumia Black update

Nokia Lumia 1020

Owners of the Nokia Lumia 1020 will be pleased to hear that the Lumia Black update has begun rolling out to the 41 mega-pixel smartphone.

The update, which came pre-loaded on the Lumia 1520 and Lumia 1320, has been released over-the-air (OTA). When you get it depends on your network provider, but you can check for the update by tapping Settings -> phone update.

The Lumia Black update improves the quality of pictures taken on the Lumia 1020 even further by adding support for the RAW Digital Negative Format (DNG).

The addition of support for DNG images (also possible on Lumia 1520) enables users to take lossless snaps, which are completely uncompressed and suffer from very little post-processing. That results in sharper images with finer detail, although understandably it increases the file size of pictures significantly.

Budding photographers will also be pleased to hear that the Lumia 1020 also gets the 'Nokia Camera' application as part of the update. The app, which combines the best of 'Nokia Smart Cam' and 'Nokia Pro Cam' into a single application, makes it even easier to edit images and videos.

Other improvements

The Lumia Black update brings a number of other features and improvements to Nokia's Lumia 1020. They include the ability to lock screen rotation, the option to close apps inside the app switcher and the possibility to use custom ringtones for mail and messages.

But it doesn't end there because it also brings support for Bluetooth 4.0 LE devices, enhanced battery monitoring and a whole host of performance and stability improvements. Last, but by no means least, you also get an updated version of 'Nokia Glance Screen' with support for quick status notifications.
