Calypso Wi-Fi Challenges 3G

3rd December , 2003

US : Calypso Wireless announced that the company is in negotiations with one of the largest cable companies in the U.S. to license and purchase Calypso's ASNAP(tm) technology and related products to the cable company.

Calypso Wireless has proprietary technology that seamlessly switches back and forth between cellular (GSM/GPRS or CDMA) networks and Wi-Fi wireless local area networks (WLAN) utilizing the 802.11 standard without losing connectivity. This makes Calypso's technology a natural fit for cable companies such as Comcast, Charter Communications and Cablevision.

Calypso's technology enables cell phones and other mobile devices to automatically detect an available wireless local area network and then seamlessly switch between the signals from a GSM/GPRS link tower to the broadband network such as cable with Wi-Fi. The wireless customer remains connected to the GSM/GPRS or CDMA network until his cell phone detects a Wi-Fi network.

The wireless customer remains connected to the GSM/GPRS or CDMA network until his cell phone detects a Wi-Fi network. At that point, the cell phone seamlessly switches to that network and is now able to connect at a speed of 11,000 Kbps (11Mbps) enabling movie-quality, real-time video conferencing via Calypso's cellular phones, or any cell phones powered with Calypso's technology.

This technology could create a powerful new profit center for cable companies providing broadband Internet access. Calypso's technology can turn every cable outlet into a wireless revenue-generating unit. This is how it works: A cell phone user with a Calypso-powered cellular phone will be able to connect to any Wi-Fi access point connected to a cable network. The cable company will then route the connection to the user's mobile carrier's network. The mobile carrier will then share the roaming charges with the cable company. The cable company will also be able to offer value added service to its customers regardless of where they connect...home Wi-Fi, office WLAN or public hot-spots. Every time the cell phone user makes a phone call using his cell phone at home, the call is routed through the wireless network instead of the traditional GSM/GPRS or CDMA link tower, however, when the user travels out of range of the Wi-Fi access point, the connection seamlessly switches to the cellular tower.

``Everybody wins. Cable companies will be able to generate new revenues through the sale or lease of Calypso-powered access points or cell phones. They will also derive additional roaming charges as compensation from mobile carriers for facilitating calls. Mobile carriers can increase the number of subscribers without having to increase cellular capacity, free up cellular spectrum, increase capacity and coverage, add more revenue producing services such as the real-time video conferencing, reduce dropped calls, improve quality of service, and locate mobile users by IP address, as the E911 mandates. And, consumers will be able to lower their airtime charges and enjoy much faster 11,000 Kbps connectivity. They can even start earning additional discounts toward their monthly cable bill. When another cell phone user picks up the access point owner's wireless network signal, the owner could pocket part of the roaming charges, which then would appear as an additional discount in the monthly cable bill,'' explains Mark Sujo, Vice President of Sales of Calypso Wireless, Inc.

The Calypso technology is already available and the company is in negotiations with several mobile carriers and a major cable company to license its technology and sell the equipment to them.

To fully understand how revolutionary Calypso Wireless' technology is, simply compare the company's 11,000 Kbps speed to the data transfer capabilities of existing wireless cellular networks in the U.S. Most cellular carriers are currently only able to reach a speed of only 9.6 to 40 Kbps, and even the future 3G networks are expected to reach about 385 Kbps. Calypso Wireless believes it is 'light-years' ahead of its competition and any service provider offering its customers Calypso powered cell phones should have a marked advantage over its competitors.

Calypso's ASNAP(tm) technology offers several benefits over all of the other systems currently in use, and over what is currently being touted in the industry as the next big thing. Calypso's cellular phones will also use WLAN technology to deliver VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) and real time video conferencing, voice and data whenever they are in range of a Wireless Access Point. This will result in both increased capacity and revenue streams for mobile carriers (cellular operators).
