First Solar-Powered 3G Mobile Base Station for Starhub
6th August, 2009
Singapore : Starhub has fitted a solar powered mobile base station ( BTS ) to the roof of its main office in Singapore, at Starhub Green, Ubi. This is a trial installation and the coverage provided is initially being used by Starhub’s office staff only.
The solar powered mobile base station is environmentally friendly, and has 20 solar panels ensuring it uses as much solar energy as possible and as little grid power in the daylight as possible. Of course, on non sunny days and at night the BTS will be powered by the national grid.
Looking at the trial results so far, around 58% of the energy used by the BTS is produced via the solar panels. This has been calculated to result in a CO2 reduction of approx. 2.5 tonnes per year.
The initial project is part of Starhub’s green projects, the aim of which is to lower its total power consumption.
