CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Rev. A Enables a New Generation of Wireless Networks

US : The CDMA Development Group (CDG) reported today that with the KDDI announcement to start deploying CDMA2000® 1xEV-DO Revision A by the end of 2006, the CDMA2000 industry enters the next phase of evolution towards next-generation packet-based networks and services based on Internet Protocol (IP). When commercially deployed, Rev. A will be the most advanced mobile wireless technology on the market, and will allow KDDI and other CDMA2000 operators to provide integrated voice, data and video services, at a lower cost and across multiple networks, ahead of their competitors.

“The next phase in the evolution of wireless services is the migration to IP-based networks and towards ubiquitous access and service integration,” said Perry LaForge, executive director of the CDG. “For CDMA2000, it is a natural step that builds on the high performance of the IP-based 1xEV-DO standard and the backward compatibility of the CDMA2000 migration path, both of which allow operators to capitalize on emerging market opportunities rapidly and cost-effectively.”

CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Rev. A is an enhanced version of 1xEV-DO Release 0, a broadband wireless technology deployed worldwide today. Rev. A improves data rates, Quality of Service (QoS) and network capacity. Data rates of 1.8 Mbps on the reverse link and 3.1 Mbps on the forward link enable richer applications and services such as video messaging and large file upload. With enhanced QoS capabilities, Rev. A is a key enabler for Voice over IP (VoIP) and other delay-sensitive services such as Push to Talk and Instant Multimedia Messaging (IMM), and for the provision of integrated voice and data services, such as video telephony. The All-IP enhanced capabilities of the standard also provide operators more flexibility and higher bandwidth efficiencies which translate into greater control and significant cost savings.

In addition to KDDI, Verizon Wireless and Sprint in the U.S. have announced plans to deploy Rev. A.
