: GSA confirms from its research completed today, that there are 75
WCDMA terminal models in the market or announced. WCDMA is specified
by the ITU as a 3G/IMT-2000 standard which enables better use of available
spectrum and more cost-effective network solutions for wideband digital
radio communications of Internet, multimedia, video and other capacity-demanding
applications for revenue growth.
GSA also
announced that there are today over 8 million WCDMA subscribers enjoying
the most advanced data services globally. WCDMA is the world's leading
standard for 3G services and builds naturally on existing investments
in GSM.
GSA additionally
stated that there are 43 WCDMA networks in commercial service in 22
countries, with a further 10 networks at pre-commercial phase (August
6, 2004). An increasing number of GSM operators will offer 3G services
enabled by a combined WCDMA/EDGE network.
