US :
UTStarcom, Inc., a global leader in IP access networking and services,
today announced that it provided its MovingMedia 2000, an IP-based
wireless softswitch technology, to QUALCOMM Incorporated, a pioneer
and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless
technology, for the recent in-flight voice communications proof of
concept test onboard an American Airlines commercial aircraft.
Through
the use of an in-cabin, third-generation picocell network developed
by QUALCOMM, passengers on the proof of concept flight originating
from Dallas/Ft. Worth International Airport were able to place and
receive voice calls and text messages. UTStarcom's MovingMedia 2000
wireless softswitch solution enabled passengers using commercially
available CDMA mobile phones to connect to the worldwide terrestrial
phone network through an air-to-ground Globalstar satellite link.
"As
the telecommunications industry continues to migrate from wireline
to wireless, the ability to deliver high-quality mobile phone service
to travelers worldwide on commercial airlines, trains and cruise ships
will become a requirement for operators who wish to attract new subscribers
in the future," said Jack Mar, corporate vice president and president
of UTStarcom's CDMA division. "UTStarcom is committed to all-IP,
next-generation CDMA2000 technology and is very proud to have partnered
with QUALCOMM to deliver wireless communications on this historic
test flight."
In March,
UTStarcom and QUALCOMM announced a commercial CDMA subscriber unit
and infrastructure license agreement that granted UTStarcom an intellectual
property license to develop, manufacture and sell subscriber and infrastructure
equipment for use in CDMA2000(R), WCDMA (UMTS) and TD-SCDMA systems.

MovingMedia 2000
UTStarcom's
MovingMedia 2000 is a full-featured, wireless softswitch solution
that converges voice, data and multimedia applications, as well as
signaling over a packet-based network. The MovingMedia 2000 supports
3GPP R99/R4 GSM/UMTS, 3GPP2 CDMA2000 1X and SIP-based networks, offering
wireless data services such as short messaging services (SMS) and
Internet access as well as full mobility features, including voicemail
and prepaid applications.
As part
of a system consisting of distributed mobile switching centers (MSC),
media gateways, and CDMA IP-based base stations, MovingMedia 2000
enables an operator to centralize network control and distribute the
switching endpoints (base stations and gateways) where required. As
a result, capital costs are minimized and operating costs associated
with backhauling are effectively eliminated.
