ASIA : Motorola, announced that Conrad Humphreys will be using Motorola’s A830 handsets to help in his attempt to win the famous Fastnet Race following the Cowes Week yachting regatta.

Using the video camera features of Motorola’s 3G ‘phone, the crew will be able to provide reports on their progress and download up-to-the-minute weather reports and tidal charts supported by the network operator. Motorola’s A830 handset can communicate over UMTS 3G networks, as well as GPRS and GSM, so that Conrad and his team can communicate easily over any of the available mobile phone networks.

Ron Garriques, Motorola vice president and general manager for Personal Communications Sector, EMEA, said: “Through working with Conrad on personal development activities for our staff, we know he is a winner. We are very excited to be involved in this world-renowned race. Our Motorola A830 handsets will make the team’s work simpler and safer, enabling them to remain in contact and share their experiences with yachting fans online.”

Mr Garriques will christen the newly-sponsored ‘HELLOMOTO V60’ yacht on Friday 8th August at 18.30 in Ocean Village, Southampton. The sponsorship is part of Motorola’s involvement in a wider Leadership Learning Partnership and title-sponsorship support for Conrad Humphreys’ entire 2003 racing programme.

Conrad Humphreys said: “The Rolex Fastnet race is one of the most exciting races in the UK calendar and requires a team who can sprint over the 608 mile course. Having won this race previously on both the smallest and the biggest boats in class, I’m confident that my co-skipper Hamish Oliphant and I have put together a strong team for this year’s event that comprises a mix of talented youth and experienced ocean sailors, together with Motorola’s latest mobile communications technology.”
