Europe : Fortinet announced that 3 Scandinavia, a leading mobile operator in Sweden and Denmark, has implemented Fortinet's FortiGate(TM)-5020 carrier-class security systems and FortiGuard(TM) Anti-virus and Anti-spam subscription services to secure its mobile network of 700,000 mobile subscribers in Scandinavia.

Part of the Hutchison Telecommunications group, a leading owner and operator of worldwide telecommunications and Internet infrastructure, 3 Scandinavia set out to safeguard its mobile network traffic from security threats such as viruses, spam and worms that can be contained in its email and multimedia mobile services (MMS). With its large number of subscribers, the Scandinavian mobile operator was looking for a high-performing, scalable security solution that would also be cost-effective.

Based on these requirements, 3 Scandinavia decided to replace its existing security solution with two Fortinet FortiGate-5020 chassis-based multi-threat security systems. With Fortinet, 3 Scandinavia benefits from multi-gigabit antivirus protection and can scan both email and MMS messages from one single platform to clean the traffic from infected files or content. The mobile operator also opted for Fortinet's FortiGuard antivirus and anti-spam subscription services to get continuous protection against the latest security threats.

"As mobile services get more sophisticated with the offer of a wide array of multimedia content such as movies and games, our networks get more exposed to viruses and other harmful attacks," said Sandra Strandberg, solution manager for the messaging platform at 3 Scandinavia. "Fortinet's carrier-class security platforms provide us with the high performance and scalability we need in terms of quantity of messages we can filter. Also, Fortinet's model of a per-system licensing was very attractive and allowed us to realize a ROI in only five months compared to the cost of our previous solution, which was based on a per-seat license."

Fortinet's FortiGate-5000 Series of modular, chassis-based multi-threat security systems are the industry's first security solutions to comply with the Advanced Telecom Computing Architecture (ATCA) standard for next generation carrier grade communications equipment. Mobile operators, telecommunication carriers, service providers and large enterprise customers can configure FortiGate-5000 Series systems in a variety of ways to offer unmatched performance, reliability, scalability and security.

"Expanding and opening up networks for roaming, innovation in mobile services, and the significant adoption of standard-based mobile devices all have created new security challenges for mobile operators," said Andre Stewart, Fortinet's vice president of sales, EMEA. "In a very competitive market, telcos are well aware that they need to address those risks while controlling their costs. With our FortiGate-5000 carrier-class products, mobile operators like 3 Scandinavia don't have to make any sacrifices."
