Canada : Sierra Wireless and Digi International announced that Digi has selected the Sierra Wireless AirCard(R) 860 and AirCard(R) 850 HSDPA PC Cards, AirCard(R) 775 EDGE PC Card, and MC5720 EV-DO PCI Express Mini Card embedded module to provide 3G wireless connectivity for their upgradeable ConnectPort WAN VPN router product line. ConnectPort WAN VPN routers (photo above) are commercially available today to customers globally.

Digi's ConnectPort WAN VPN product is a commercial grade, upgradeable 3G router that offers a secure, high-speed cellular connection for reliable, primary and backup network connectivity to remote sites and devices. The highly flexible ConnectPort WAN VPN router provides the functionality of a cellular router, firewall, switch, VPN appliance and terminal server in one device and is the industry's first standalone platform that is both upgradeable and commercial grade.

The ConnectPort WAN VPN router enables devices to connect to a central site using a single wireless wide area connection, courtesy of Sierra Wireless PC Cards and embedded modules, and offers maximum flexibility to users when a wireline connection is not available. The ConnectPort WAN VPN router features an embedded four-port Ethernet switch, two RS-232 serial ports and one USB port, and is ideal for industrial automation, point-of-sale, retail, medical and video surveillance applications.

AirCard(R) 860, AirCard 850 for HSDPA/UMTS networks

The AirCard 860 and AirCard 850 wireless WAN cards are Type II PC Cards with a slim, unextended design, allowing users to conveniently store the unit inside the laptop. Fully functional on HSDPA, UMTS, EDGE, and GPRS networks, the AirCard 860 utilizes the 850 and 1900 MHz UMTS frequency bands while the AirCard 850 utilizes the 2100 MHz UMTS frequency band and is targeted primarily for use in Europe. Both offer average data rates of 500 to 800 kbps, with bursts over 1 Mbps on HSDPA networks*. In areas where HSDPA or UMTS network coverage is not available, the AirCard 860 and AirCard 850 will connect to EDGE and GSM/GPRS networks. Ideal for frequent travelers, these cards enable international roaming on all four EDGE and GPRS frequency bands (850, 900, 1800, and 1900 MHz) used worldwide.

AirCard(R) 775 for EDGE/GPRS/GSM networks

Designed for mobile professionals, the AirCard 775 fits into a PCMCIA slot in a laptop computer and provides access to email, the Internet, and corporate applications over an EDGE network at data rates averaging 100 to 130 kilobits per second (kbps), with peak rates up to 216 kbps. The AirCard 775 card also supports global roaming, functioning on EDGE and GSM/GPRS networks on all four GSM frequency bands (850, 900, 1800 and 1900 MHz) used worldwide, making it a powerful tool for frequent travelers who need to stay in touch with their colleagues and access corporate intranets or Web-based applications while they are away from the office.

MC5720 PCI Express Mini Card for EV-DO networks

The dual-band MC5720 PCI Express Mini Card, built using the MSM6500(TM) Mobile Station Modem(TM) chipset from QUALCOMM, offers typical download data rates of 400-700 kbps, with peak speeds up to 2.4 Mbps. To provide coverage in areas where an EV-DO network connection is not available, the MC5720 module is also compatible with widely available 1X networks and will seamlessly switch without interrupting the user. The module measures 51 x 30 x 4.5 mm, weighs in at less than 12 g, and complies with new European Union directives on RoHS (Restrictions on Hazardous Substances).
