5 Million CDMA Wireless Phones to India

ASIA : LGE has supplied the super-high growth CDMA sector of emerging market India with 5 million CDMA phones, and presently has a 50 percent market share. LGE entered the market at the end of 2002 with the India-customized LG-RD2030 CDMA phone.

In April 2003 it unveiled the LG-RD7130 color mobile phone. In January of this year it launched the LG-RD7230 camera phone. With these various leading-edge models, LGE has sold 5 million CDMA phones (including CDMA WLL receivers) since its entry into the Indian market in 2002 up to the present. This is in fact a more than 50 percent share of the Indian market.

The reason for LGE's ascendancy in the Indian market is that since 2002 when CDMA service was planned LGE has taken a leading role in planning products with local service companies, dispatching large numbers of development people, and helping in the initial stabilization of the service network. In addition, from the beginning it has worked closely with Reliance Infocomm in constructing a pan-Indian after-service network. LGE has followed a thorough localization policy of building trust with local partners.

Reliance Infocomm, the top service provider at present in the Indian CDMA market, is projecting new subscribers to increase 130 percent this year to approximately 8 million. New products such as its pre-paid service will enable this goal to be met. This increase in new subscribers will translate into a demand for 9 million new phones.
In addition, to secure LGE's conquest of the Indian CDMA market, LGE is concentrating on localizing R&D. As a result the Indian market sees six to seven leading-edge LG CDMA mobile phone models fulfilling every customer need, from camera phones to color phones.
