3G Video Trial Results

17th April 2003

Finland : Third generation mobile devices and services (3G) are being developed rapidly at the moment. A research report from the National Consumer Research Centre in Finland looks for meaningful situations to watch mobile videos. Mobile phones suitable for viewing videos were handed to persons of different ages and they were asked to report their experiences in a diary.

Inset is the Nokia 7650 with a RealOne Player during the trial.

It appears that there are at least two kinds of situations in which the use of a mobile video phone seems meaningful. Firstly, users can entertain themselves in boring situations such as during a bus trip or queuing in a store. Secondly, a mobile video offers the opportunity to share experiences, for instance, watching a karaoke video or children's animated cartoons.

At first the videos seemed interesting, but very quickly enthusiasm turned into boredom largely due to the limited content of the video selection. The viewers called for a continuously updated broad selection of videos.

The study was carried out in cooperation with the Finnish mobile operator Radiolinja and it took place in week 48/2002. The videos were streamed at 22 kbps. They were watched with Nokia 7650 -phones equipped with RealOne Player.
