Europe's First Mobile Video Music Service |
|
31st March 2003 |
|
The Musiwave service is now ready for launch, at a time when video ready handsets and networks are being rolled out to millions of mobile users and demand for entertainment content is exploding: - GPRS networks: the higher bandwidth of GPRS mobile networks and the highly efficient PacketVideo compression technology (MPEG4/3GPP) reduces average download times, allowing the commercial delivery of music video content - Next generation mobile phone installed base: by the end of 2003, between 8 & 12 million colour GPRS smartphones which are able to receive & play video, such as the Sony Ericsson P800, the Nokia 3650 and the Siemens SX1, will be in the hands of Europe's consumers - Consumer demand: all the market research of Musiwave and PacketVideo points to live entertainment download and streaming as a key driver behind 8-12 milllion European consumers buying a GPRS smartphone. This new Musiwave service will allow mobile users to easily receive and enjoy high quality music video content. To power the service, Musiwave are to deploy the entire PacketVideo pv3 Mobilemedia SystemTM software solution, which includes: PVAuthor, PVServer and PVPlayer. This system can be used for streaming, download, and progressive download of audio-visual content over existing GPRS networks.
The Musiwave download service will include: o Content management: in particular the creation of a catalogue with value-added music video clips. Musiwave has been working for several years with most major record label companies (including Sony Music, BMG & Zomba). The company has signed various content licensing deals to enable the launch of mobile music services and applications. For this new video clips download service, Musiwave will be making its rich video content catalogue available to mobile consumers and is currently in advanced discussions with key record companies to license additional video catalogues. o Service management: comprising editorial and artistic management to provide up to date and relevant content for each national market. o Download platform management: administration of the download platform, delivering content which can address all video enabled devices on the market.
Gilles Babinet, CEO of Musiwave, declares: "With this new service, PacketVideo & Musiwave are enabling mobile operators to drive forward the mobile data service market. This service is also a great opportunity for operators to increase their ARPU."
"The worldwide success of ringtones shows that mobile music content delivery is already a money making business," says Patrick Parodi, Regional Director, PacketVideo Europe. "Our Mobilemedia technology enables Musiwave to provide operators with an easy and cost effective way to take the mobile music experience a leap forward, well before UMTS. Services such as Musiwave's can be to mobile telephony what MTV was to television - a force that will really drive take-up and at the same time produce new business models for the mobile operators and record labels," concluded Parodi. |
