Diversinet Corp, Ericsson, Gemplus, Hewlett-Packard, Hongkong Post, and Intel, have provided a mobile certificate trial solution to the Hong Kong m-Cert Implementation Forum (HKMIF). Hong Kongs six local mobile operators jointly formed the Hong Kong m-Cert Implementation Forum to develop and implement a single mobile digital certificate (m-Cert) standard to promote mobile commerce in Hong Kong. The forum aims at facilitating the adoption of a single m-Cert for all Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) based mobile commerce services.. For the trial system for the m-Cert solution, Diversinet, Ericsson, Gemplus, Hewlett-Packard, Hongkong Post, and Intel teamed up to provide a secured WAP 1.2.1 solution. The WAP based solution consists of Ericssons WTLS Class 3 enabled WAP phones and WAP gateway, Gemplus SIM/WIM cards, and Diversinets PKI Portal and next-generation X.509-compliant certificate server. The companies concluded a user trial on November 9, 2001, and successfully completed a pilot test of the solution on February 22, 2002. The pilot program consists of using the WAP security solution supporting two wireless applications over Ericsson WAP phones. The two applications were (1) wireless stock trading on the testing mode of the Hong Kong stock market, and (2) Mobile VPN (MVPN) solution for secure email and PIM access with the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Gemplus is pleased to be one of the pioneers in Asias first WAP based m-commerce implementation in a complete end-to-end PKI infrastructure environment, and is committed to securing next generation WAP solutions and enhancing the wireless user-experience, stated Goh Say-Yeow, General Manager of Gemplus Hong Kong and Taiwan Gemplus Technologies Asia. We applaud the foresight of the m-Cert Implementation Forum and it was an honor to work towards the forums goals with this group of prestigious industry players. On behalf of HKMIF, the joint initiative of all the six mobile operators in Hong Kong, we are very delighted to see the completion of the pilot of the m-Cert solution. We are confident and committed to promote mobile commerce in Hong Kong, and our next step is to introduce diverse services and applications to serve the needs of the consumers" said the Hong Kong m-Cert Implementation Forum. The HKMIF has also obtained the full support of Hongkong Post, the recognized public Certification Authority in Hong Kong, to implement this vision through the Hongkong Posts wireless security infrastructure. "We are proud to be part of an excellent team to introduce a secure and user-friendly WAP solution for Hong Kong consumers and businesses alike. We are positive that the solution will be adopted globally by mobile phone operators and m-commerce services providers, said Mr. P.C. LUK, the Postmaster General. This solution reinforces Diversinets technological leadership position, said Nick Darwish, Vice President, Sales and Marketing, Diversinet Corp. By offering a WAP 1.2.1 solution for the market, Diversinet is staying current with market demands and building security solutions for next-generation handsets that take advantage of the latest industry developments such as higher bandwidths, faster data speeds, greater processing power, and varied screen sizes. "HP is thrilled to play a part in advancing the adoption of mobile commerce standards in Hong Kong," said Kris Chan, Director of Marketing, Business Customer Organisation, Hewlett-Packard Hong Kong Limited. "A prerequisite for an effective m-commerce platform is an always-on Internet infrastructure, and HP is working closely with the members of the HKMIF to create a solid hardware platform by providing multiple servers as a test bed for the m-Cert trial." "Intel applauds Hong Kong's effort to develop a single mobile certificate standard, and is pleased to work with Diversinet and the HKMIF to enable an open standards, high performance and secure platform, running on Intel® Architecture," said Tom Burns, Director, Intel Asia Pacific Internet Solutions Group.
