J-Phone's 3G Delay in Japan

J-Phone will delay its 3G wireless service to December 2002 due to delays in developing new phones, loacal paper outlined.

European handset makers are working on new technology that would allow mobile phone users to make calls from anywhere in the world. J-Phone is delaying until the handsets for the technology exist. J-Phone currently offer a trial version of its 3G service to approx. 200 subscribers in the key Tokyo region.

NTT DoCoMo, was the first to launch its 3G in the Tokyo area in October 2000 and begun expanding it to major cities nationwide. KDDI, the nation's second-biggest wireless company, started offering 3G mobile services this month via its AU service. 3G didn't take-off as well as planned with NTT DoCoMo had subscribers totalling approx. 95,000 at end of March 2002 which is less than of the 150,000 it had projected.
