From its humble beginnings as a start-up search engine, Google is now a superpower taking on Apple’s iPhone and iOS with its excellent Android smartphone/tablet OS and its own 3G mobile phones (branded Nexus), designed in partnership with mobile manufacturers such as Samsung.

 

Google acquired Motorola in 2011, further cementing its reputation as a mobile heavyweight. Most smartphones and tablets feature Google’s Android OS, the latest version being Ice Cream Sandwich, designed for use of both phones and tablet devices – the previous Gingerbread and Honeycomb versions of Android were made for mobile phones and tablets respectively.
