The Sony Xperia Z1 is an exciting handset for a number of reasons, from its top end specs and amazing camera to its beautiful design and waterproofing. But one standout feature that deserves a closer look is ‘Social Live’.
It’s a mode that you can select for the video camera and it allows you to stream a video live to Facebook, receiving real time comments from Facebook friends while you’re still filming.
The responses appear right on your screen, so you can see them without having to stop filming, though replying to anything while filming might be a bit tricky. You can pick which friends to send the stream out to if you want to keep it semi-private, though you can also make it public if you just want as many people watching as possible.
It’s an inspired way to capture big moments and could also be a useful tool for companies who want an easy way to stream an event or announcement straight to Facebook.
Of course you can also still just upload videos to Facebook after the fact, but for moments you want to share immediately or get reactions to as they’re happening this is a great solution.
Currently it’s exclusive to the Sony Xperia Z1, which makes it one of the phones many selling points. It’s entirely possible that it will filter down to other Xperia devices eventually, but that hasn’t been confirmed.
Loads of phone makers are devising new photography modes and options but most tend to largely ignore video, so it’s nice to see an exciting new video feature appear. From what we’ve seen so far we’re big fans of Social Live and it’s likely that many other people will be too.
