UK : Vodafone have signed a new deal with Warner Music, enabling them to distribute its music DRM-free “over the air”.
Last week Vodafone announced its real time Music Top 40 website , so it seems Vodafone really values Music as a key driver in the its mobile future.
Digital Rights Management (DRM) basically locks your music to the device you downloaded it on. For example, if you download a song from i-tunes you could only play it on your iPod.
So it’s a big thing that Vodafone offers DRM-free music as it basically means you can transfer and listen to the tracks on any multimedia device, including your phone, PC and iPod.
The addition of Warner Music gives Vodafone customers access to all four major labels (Universal Music, Sony BMG, EMI and Warner). Music from all four is available in DRM-free format, putting Vodafone in an exclusive position.
Warners Music is already being added to the Vodafone Live store and the extra tracks added will total 1 million.
Tracks are normally around 50p on the Vodafone Live store, which for DRM-free music is a highly competitive price.
