Europe : It is reported that O2 and Vodafone have submitted offers to buy T-Mobile UK according to the Sunday Times. This would create a 3G mobile operator giant of course. The potential purchase is heading towards a conclusion within the next few weeks.
The bids are both believed to be around three and a half billion pounds.
Recent UK market share analysis from Enders Analysis shows :
- O2 leads the way with 27.7%.market share of revenues
- Vodafone has 24.7% market share of revenues
- Orange has 21.5% market share of revenues
- T-Mobile UK has 14.9% market share of revenues
It can be seen that a purchase of T-Mobile UK would change this dramtically :
- O2 ( 27.7% ) plus T-Mobile (14.9% ) = 42.60%
- Vodafone ( 24.7% ) plus T-Mobile (14.9% ) = 39.60%
- Orange still has 21.5% market share of revenues = 21.5%
The mobile operators involved see this as a one-off opportunity to setup a UK leader but this takeover would surely be looked at by Ofcom – the UK’s telecom regulator.
