New 3GPP Integrated Mobile Broadcast Standard
9th September , 2009
World : A new 3GPP standard for Integrated Mobile Broadcast ( IMB ) has been ratified by The GSM Association ( GSMA ) which will improve the take-up of 3G broadcast services and 3G mobile broadband offerings across the globe.
Integrated 3G Mobile Broadcast focuses on spectrally optimized delivery of the broadcast via technology along the lines of FDD WCDMA but the beauty of IMB is that it can also be operated in the TDD frequency spectrum. Thereby producing a smooth call or data handover between IMB and current 3G network technology.
A number 3G mobile operators can maximize frequency efficiency as they can use 1MB chunks of frequency spectrum ( issued as part of their 3G licence ) which currently are unused.
Integrated Mobile Broadcast releases the 1MB spectrum for voice and data transmission becoming a much wanted additional bandwidth by mobile operators. In addition, IMB reuses many aspects of existing, deployed technologies such as 3G UMTS and Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service (MBMS).
"IMB has been created through collaborative mobile industry effort and offers mobile operators an opportunity to launch new services to their customers," said Alex Sinclair, Chief Technology Officer at the GSMA. "The GSMA is delighted to be endorsing this technology and we look forward to seeing the advanced services the mobile operator community will deploy using this flexible new mobile broadcast standard."
In combination with 3GPP specifications, the white paper will allow infrastructure and handset manufacturers to develop common implementations of IMB, which in turn will promote mass adoption through the generation of economies of scale and an IMB ecosystem.
