New 3G Enabled GPS-Capable Wireless Phone
18th September 2002

Samsung Telecommunications and Verizon Wireless introduced the compact SCH-a310 wireless phone, which provides high-speed data communications, Global Positioning System (GPS) capabilities and personalization features.

The a310 provides serious style with the latest communications technology. The advanced wireless handset supports Verizon Wireless’ 1X high-speed data network-the Express NetworkSM-when used as a modem with a Mobile Office connectivity kit on laptops and select PDAs. With 1X data capabilities, STA’s a310 lets Verizon Wireless customers keep pace with their busy schedules through fast access to office networks, e-mail or the Internet.

Personalization takes on new meaning with some of the a310’s features. The external LCD screen has seven programmable colored backlights so incoming calls can be color coded for easy recognition, particularly helpful when the user is in dark locations. To reflect their moods and styles, customers can choose from the changeable faceplates, available in multiple colors, and screensavers that are available on the a310.

In areas where Verizon Wireless has upgraded Enhanced 911 services at local 911 call center systems and local phone company networks, the a310’s GPS capability can help to automatically identify the calling location and wireless phone number to the call center. Verizon Wireless has reported that it has achieved the E-911 Phase II milestones set by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and is on track to meet additional FCC goals, including deploying network-based technologies and handset sales.

“Samsung is proud to provide a feature-rich phone that meets the needs of Verizon Wireless’ customers,” said Peter Skarzynski, senior vice president of wireless terminals, Samsung. “With customizable features, 1X capabilities and GPS, the a310 offers a combination of advanced communications with high-style for Verizon’s image-conscious, tech-savvy consumers.”

“Since many of our customers are finding they require a device that does more than make voice calls, we are working very closely with manufacturers to meet their needs,” said Rich Meigh, vice president of wireless devices, Verizon. “The a310 by Samsung is a good example of technology truly working for the customer.”

Weighing just 3.2 ounces, the a310 features dual LCD screens, allowing users to identify callers without flipping open the phone. The a310 also incorporates a number of STA’s advanced features, including a built-in personal information manger (PIM), Tegic T9™ text input, voice-activated dialing and two-way text messaging. The a310, which retails for $199.99 after a $50 instant rebate, is available in select Verizon Wireless Communications Stores and online at www.verizonwireless.com. The Mobile Office connectivity kit retails for $79.99 and will be available where the a310 is available.
