First Integrated System for Complete 3G CDMA Wireless Device Performance Analysis
13th September 2002

Spirent Communications announced shipment of the industry's first integrated solution for complete analysis of CDMA mobile device performance. To support mobile handset manufacturers and wireless service providers in the requirements of the FCC's E911 Phase II mandate and new location-based services initiatives, Spirent has introduced enhancement to C2K-ATS, the first automated test platform for 2G and 3G CDMA mobile devices. The new option leverages the world-class attributes of two Spirent products that incorporate Global Positioning System (GPS) and CDMA technology.

"In today's competitive environment speed to market is critical, yet the technical complexities of testing mobile devices are greater than ever," said Mike Keeley, product manager for Spirent Communications - Wireless. "By integrating these two products, Spirent is helping manufacturers and service providers quickly and thoroughly evaluate mobile devices, accelerating the rollout of new 3G services and mandatory services such as E911."

The C2K-ATS is capable of fully evaluating physical layer and protocol layer performance of 2G and 3G CDMA mobile devices and now includes the automatic location identification performance required by the FCC's E911 Phase II mandate. C2K-ATS addresses conflicting requirements that face mobile device manufacturers and service providers. Rapidly-increasing numbers of test cases must be run to verify the full performance of new 3G products, yet time-to-market goals are more aggressive than ever. Without this newly combined Spirent system, performance testing of location-capable mobile devices is not efficient, needing to be performed on more than one test system to get complete coverage.

By combining powerful application software and capable instruments, the system helps reduce time to market and conserves valuable engineering resources by providing a turn-key, automated solution for mobile performance analysis. The key industry-standard performance tests, such as Stage 1 (IS-98), Stage 2 (IS-898) and Location Performance (IS-916) are automated in C2K-ATS, allowing large test campaigns to be run with a minimum of user intervention. The system also enables potential design flaws to be caught earlier in the development cycle, enabling more trouble-free deployment.

The new option for Spirent's C2K-ATS CDMA2000 Automatic Test System unites two industry-standard test systems: C2K-ATS and the PLTS Position Location Test System, both are solutions of choice at the world's leading CDMA service providers.

C2K-ATS is comprised of proven industry leading Spirent Comms instruments and software including: TASKIT(R)/C2K and TASKIT(R)/PLTS Test Application Software, UDM Universal Diagnostic Monitor software, TAS4500 FLEX5 RF Channel Emulator, CIL CDMA2000 Interference Lab and AirAccess C2K CDMA Network Emulator. Testing of location-capable mobiles is enabled by the addition of a GSS5060 GPS Location Simulator and a TAS3710 Position Determination Entity (PDE), which uses algorithms licensed from the leading commercially-deployed PDE.
This suite of Spirent equipment provides a complete solution for all phases of CDMA mobile device design, development and deployment. This solution demonstrates Spirent Communications' commitment to sustain and enhance its leading role in accelerating next generation wireless service rollout.
