Brazil
: VIVO announced Brazil's first CDMA2000 1xEV-DO service on its Motorola
supplied network in Curitiba, Parana State. As part of an agreement
with Motorola Industrial Ltda, the Brazilian subsidiary of Motorola,
Inc., to support this CDMA2000 1xEV-DO trial, Motorola is providing
network hardware, software, and deployment services. It is upgrading
existing Motorola Base Transceiver Subsystems (BTS) with the addition
of a new Multi-Channel CDMA Module to enable CDMA2000 1xEV-DO service.
"With
a 1xEV-DO network our customers can enjoy a whole suite of new services
and applications with download speeds that rival that of other high
speed alternatives, "said Javier Rodriguez, VIVO's vice president
of technology and network.
Motorola's
3G solution enables subscribers to experience high data rates -- at
peak speeds of up to 2.4 Megabits per second (Mbps) -- that will provide
them ready access to real-time services and applications such as e-mail,
the Internet, music and file downloading, video and audio streaming.
"Motorola's CDMA experience and technology leadership once again
comes into play, giving VIVO's subscribers access to mobile data services,
and providing an attractive differentiator for VIVO in the highly
competitive telecoms market in Brazil," said Jose Figueroa, corporate
vice president and general manager of Motorola's Global Telecom Solutions
Sector for the Latin America and Caribbean Region.
In
addition to mobile broadband, VIVO has taken advantage of several
of Motorola's innovative solutions, including its Push-To-Talk over
Cellular and SoftSwitch. VIVO's order for Motorola SoftSwitches, announced
in July 2004, is the largest single order among Motorola's base of
global customers and one of the largest in the industry. Motorola's
SoftSwitch can be deployed more quickly than a traditional circuit
switch, enabling VIVO to readily and cost- effectively adapt its network
for future enhancements.
CDMA2000
1xEV-DO, the next step in CDMA evolution, is optimized for data services.
It reduces the cost of delivering data, as it enables data applications
at faster speeds. Motorola's CDMA2000 1xEV-DO offering provides effective
cost management through planned network upgrades that will integrate
with customers' current CDMA2000 1X networks to maximize the re-use
of their existing infrastructure equipment.
