UPDATED: Sony Xperia Z1 Mini Price, Specifications and Release Date
Sometimes the smartphone world seems like a strange place. Manufacturers seem to be ever increasing the size of their handsets only to come out with a mini version shortly afterwards. The Sony Xperia Z1 Mini is the latest shrunk down phone. As the name suggests it’s a smaller version of the Sony Xperia Z1 and it looks set to compete with the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini and the HTC One Mini.
Specification for the Sony Xperia Z Mini
The design of the Sony Xperia Z1 Mini is more or less exactly the same as the design of the Sony Xperia Z1, just smaller. So you can expect a glass back and a metal frame, giving it a high class look and feel. Its dimensions are 127 x 65 x 9.4mm, which means it’s a little fatter than the 8.5mm Z1 and it comes in at around 140g.
It’s going to be available in black, white, lime and pink, so whether you want a conventional colour scheme or something that will stand out there should be an option there that will work. Like other recent Xperia phones, the Xperia Z1 Mini is also waterproof.
The Sony Xperia Z1 Mini has a 4.3 inch 1280 x 720 display with a pixel density of 330 pixels per inch. That makes it a 720p display, rather than the 1080p display like the 5 inch Sony Xperia Z1 has.
It uses a Triluminos display, allowing it to replicate a greater range of colours than conventional screens and it uses Sony’s X-Reality technology to reduce noise and improve the contrast of pictures and videos. It is also capable of reducing reflections to make the screen more readable in bright sunlight.
While the HTC One Mini and Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini both have substantially worse specs than their full sized counterparts, the Sony Xperia Z1 Mini actually has very similar specs to the Sony Xperia Z1.
It has a 2.2 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor and 2GB of RAM, both of which are the same as the Sony Xperia Z1 has. It will ship with Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean and supports 3G, 4G, Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi and NFC. It has 16GB of built in storage and a micro SD card slot with support for cards of up to 64GB.
Plus it has a 20.7 megapixel camera, which uses Sony’s Exmor RS sensor and a wide angle 27mm G-Lens, which once again is the same as the Sony Xperia Z1. It should be able to take good low light shots and also handle movement with minimal blur. Plus it has enough megapixels to be able to do up to 3x zoom with no noticeable loss in image quality.
As you’d expect there are a number of different camera modes, such as burst shot and social live. The Sony Xperia Z1 Mini also has a 2.2 megapixel front facing camera and can shoot video in 1080p.
Other than the screen size, the only other thing that seems to have been shrunk in the Z1 Mini is the battery, which is down from 3000 mAh to 2300 mAh. However, given that the screen is also smaller there’s a good chance that it will provide comparable battery life to the Sony Xperia Z1.
Release date and price for Sony Xperia Z Mini
UPDATE - Sony are expected to unveil the global version of the Xperia Z1 Mini on November 12th at a press event in Shanghai. It's now possible that the smartphone will launch in the UK before the end of 2013.
The Sony Xperia Z1 Mini doesn’t currently have a UK release date. However it has been officially announced for release in Japan, where it carries the name Sony Xperia Z1f. Whether it will keep that name or be called the Z1 Mini when it reaches the UK remains to be seen.
In any case it’s not even coming out in Japan until late December, so we may have a bit of a wait for a UK release.
There’s also no word on how much it will cost just yet, but given that it has a smaller screen than the Sony Xperia Z1 it’s likely to cost less than that, which currently retails at around £550.
On the other hand, the screen size seems to be the only major difference, so the Sony Xperia Z1 Mini is still likely to be a very expensive handset and we’d be surprised if it was less than £400 at launch.
