Nokia Lumia Smartphone Sales Reach New High: Is the Phoenix Rising?
The last couple of years havn't been kind to Nokia who've seen their smartphone share fall rapidly, and have even seen their dominance in the 'feature' phone market waining. The company were forced into adapting, or they risked ceasing trading completely - to give you an idea of how serious things got they lost £5.86 billion in the 3rd quarter of 2012 alone.
The first big change Nokia made was dropping their own smartphone operating system in favour of Microsoft's Windows Phone. That led to the launch of Windows' powered Lumia smartphone range. However, initial sales of Lumia smartphones wern't encouraging, which led to industry experts questioning the long-term future of the company.
Thankfully, things now look to be on the up for Nokia's mobile division. They are now owned by Microsoft and that gives them a solid financial foundation, as well as enabling them to coordinate even more closely with Microsoft when producing and designing their Lumia mobile devices.
Sales are also increasing with the WSJ reporting that Nokia Lumia sales reached a new high in the 3rd quarter of 2013. In the quarter Nokia sold 'at least 8 million' Lumia phones, which is up from 7.2 million in the previous quarter and a whopping 275 per cent increase compared to the same time last year. Admittedly, they've still got some way to go to catchup with Samsung and Apple but things are looking up.
It's currently a busy time for Nokia who've just unveiled their first phablets (the Nokia Lumia 1520 and Lumia 1320) and the Nokia Lumia 2520 tablet. Meanwhile, the Nokia Lumia 1020 continues to attract significant media attention, due to an aggressive marketing push and its 41 mega-pixel Pureview camera.
Nokia are also now able to produce Windows smartphones with 1080p displays and quad-core processors - thanks to the recent Windows Phone 8 update 3 - which should see them go from strength to strength over the next year. Whether they can ever truly rival Samsung and Apple remains to be seen - but they've got a chance if they keep producing great devices!
