Nokia Lumia 1520 vs Lumia 1320: What are the differences?
Nokia unveiled two new phablets earlier in the week and caught the mobile world by surprise. We expected them to unveil the Nokia Lumia 1520 phablet, but we weren't expecting them to unveil the more affordable Lumia 1320.
They both run on Windows Phone 8 and will launch later this year, but one of them costs less than half the price of the other. In this article we'll highlight the major differences between the two phablets.
Both the Lumia 1520 and the Lumia 1320 have 6 inch displays that come with Nokia's 'Super Sensitive' mode - enabling you to control the smartphone even when wearing gloves. However, there are a couple of key differences between the two devices touch-screens.
Nokia's Lumia 1520 has a full HD 1080p 6 inch touch-screen giving the smartphone a pixels-per-inch (ppi) rating of 367, while the Lumia 1320's same-sized display runs at a 1280*720 pixel resolution (244ppi).
That alone is a pretty big difference, but the Lumia 1520's display also features ClearBlack technology, High Brightness mode and Sunlight Readability. That means it gets higher overall image quality, and improved visibility in adverse lighting.
Power and Performance
The Nokia Lumia 1520 is the first Windows Phone 8 device to feature a quad-core processor. Its Snapdragon 2.2 GHz chip is backed up by 2GB of RAM - making the Lumia 1520 a pretty beastly device.
Sacrifices have been made with the Lumia 1320 because it only features a 1.7 GHz dual-core processor that is backed up by 1GB of RAM. Interestingly, they both feature the same 3400 mAH battery - so consequently the Lumia 1320 benefits from better battery life than its more powerful brother.
Dimensions and Weight
You'd be forgiven for thinking that the two 6 inch phablets would have the same dimensions and weight - but that's not the case. The Nokia Lumia 1520 is actually lighter (209 v 220g) and thinner (8.7 v 9.79mm) than the Lumia 1320 - presumably because it uses more expansive (smaller) components.
Connectivity: To NFC, or not to NFC
The Nokia Lumia 1520 and Lumia 1320 both have an impressive array of connectivity options including: WiFi, 3G, 4G and Bluetooth 4.0.
However, one feature is reserved exclusively for the more-expensive Lumia 1520, and that's NFC - so you won't be able to make contactless payments at McDonalds on the Lumia 1320.
When it comes to on-board memory the Nokia Lumia 1520 has a 32GB capacity, while the Lumia 1320 comes with just 8GB of memory. The Lumia 1320's lack of storage isn't too much of a concern because both smartphones support microSD cards (up to 32GB).
Cameras have become increasingly important in recent times and there is a significant difference between the snappers on Nokia's phablets. The Lumia 1520 has a 20 mega-pixel Pureview camera with optical-image stabilisation (OIS) and a front-facing 2 mega-pixel snapper for video calling - pretty impressive stuff.
Things have been toned-down on the Lumia 1320 which has a 5 mega-pixel rear-facing snapper with LED flash, although sadly there is no OIS - so videos are likely to be that bit jerkier. The front-facing snapper is also cut down to just 0.3 mega-pixels, but it'll still offer decent video calling quality.
Vastly Different Prices
There is a massive gulf in price between the Nokia Lumia 1520 and the Lumia 1320, with the former costing $749 (or £464) and the latter available for just $339 (or £210). You could pickup two Nokia Lumia 1320's for the price of one Lumia 1520 which really puts the differences in specification into perspective.
Choosing between the Lumia 1520 and Lumia 1320 is a tough decision. The former is a high-end phablet that is perfect for browsing and multimedia playback, while the latter is a mid-range phablet that has been priced very aggressively.
We suggest you choose the phablet that best suits your budget because whichever you choose you get a 6 inch display and the latest version of Microsoft's Windows Phone 8 platform. We'll review both smartphones shortly, so keep get the full lowdown on both devices.
